Mental Health Awareness Week

Why do so many women feel overwhelmed right now?

It’s Mental Health Awareness Week, and I wasn’t quite sure where to begin with this subject. So, I’m just going to say what I think many women quietly feel.

From the outside, life can look completely under control. You work hard. You keep the house running. You remember everyone’s appointments, birthdays and shopping lists. You probably spend your life looking after other people.

Maybe you exercise. Maybe you try to eat well. Maybe you even manage a social life now and then. But underneath it all, do you sometimes feel overwhelmed?

Not necessarily falling apart. Not unable to cope. Just… stretched. Mentally full. Exhausted in a way that sleep doesn’t always fix.

I think many women recognise that feeling. And for some of us, hormones only add another layer to it.

How hormones affect your mental health

Perimenopause and menopause symptoms can have a huge impact on the way you feel emotionally.

Brain fog.

Anxiety.

Low mood.

Feeling flat or disconnected from yourself.

Sometimes it can feel as though you’ve “lost the plot” a little, or you no longer quite recognise yourself.

And often this stage of life arrives just as many of us women are juggling work, older children, ageing parents, caring responsibilities and the mental load of everybody else’s needs. It’s a lot.

Even when our children are grown and flown, life still has a way of crowding in.

I know that feeling myself, and recently I’ve definitely had moments where overwhelm has had me firmly in its grip.

How can women support their mental health naturally?

If any of this sounds familiar, the first thing I want to say is this…

You are not failing. You are probably carrying far more than anyone realises. And your mental health deserves care and attention too. Not as a luxury or once everything else is done, but as something essential.

So, how can women improve mental health?

Start with the foundations. I know this isn’t glamorous advice, but it matters enormously.

Are you eating properly?

If you’re wondering “does your gut affect your weight or mental health?”, it’s important to understand that your gut and brain are deeply connected.

Most of us know exactly how awful we feel after too much wine, sugar or processed food. Our mood, focus and energy can plummet the next day.

Eating enough protein, fibre and healthy fats, alongside staying hydrated, genuinely helps support both hormones and mental wellbeing.

You make sure everyone else is fed properly. You deserve the same level of care.

Are you moving your body?

The impact of exercise on mental health is proven to be a positive one. Exercise doesn’t have to mean punishing gym sessions.

Walking counts. Gardening counts. Stretching counts. Dancing around the kitchen counts too.

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s helping your body and nervous system function well.

I’ve realised the gym isn’t really for me, but I do enjoy my morning exercise routine and I’m currently experimenting with line dancing in search of a bit more fun too!

Are you spending time with nature?

Whenever I feel mentally overloaded, nature is one of the first things that helps me feel calmer again.

The sea. Fresh air. Trees. Spring greenery bursting back into life.

There’s something grounding about being outside that reminds us to slow down and breathe properly again.

I arecently joined a mindfulness group because I’ve discovered that being guided helps me far more than trying to “switch off” on my own.

Sometimes support looks like simply not having to do everything by yourself.

Have you tried herbal supplements for mental health support?

I believe that herbs and supplements can play a valuable supporting role, especially when stress and hormonal changes are affecting your energy, mood and resilience.

Some of our natural herbs for mental health include:

They are not magic fixes, but our natural herbal supplements for women can help support your body while you begin rebuilding the foundations.

What to do if your mental health feels overwhelming

If you’re finding things overwhelming, please reach out.

Talk to a friend.

You do not have to carry everything silently.

At Herbs of Grace we can’t provide individual medical or mental health advice, but we can encourage women to take themselves seriously, care for their bodies, and seek support when they need it.

Because your wellbeing matters.
