Pilewort: The plant was very well known in the middle ages. Nicolas Culpepper was a great exponent of its virtues in the treatment of piles. He wrote :
It is certain by good experience that the decoction of the leaves and roots doth wonderfully help piles and haemorrhoids. Its medicinal action is essentially as an astringent. Pilewort is listed in the British Pharmacopoeia and is almost considered as a specific for piles.

Horsechestnut:The unique actions of horsechestnut are on the vessels of the circulatory system. It appears to assist in the strengthening and toning of the veins in particular. With regard to the veinous system Horse chestnuts properties are similar to rutin. Rutin is a component of vitamin P complex
(Bioflavonoids) which are used as protection against capillary fragility. As with Pilewort it is an astringent. Horse chestnut used internally is considered to be a specific for piles and also varicose veins.
Yellow Dock:The inclusion of yellow dock in this formula is an important one. Whilst Horse chestnut and pile wort are providing specific support to the outward manifestation of piles yellow dock is endeavouring to provide sustenance to the cause of this distressing condition. Yellow Dock adds informed but gentle support to the eliminative processes of the liver and also the digestion. Both the functions of the liver and digestive processes are undoubtetly linked to piles/varicose veins. Yellow Dock also contains Sulphur. Sulphur is the beauty element which is of specific value to all skin conditions.
