Abscesses / Boils Whole Body A collection of pus in a cavity consisting of spent white cells and dead invading micro-organisms. An abscess may appear on any part of the body i.e. ear, nose, throat, teeth, gums, rectum etc. Discharge of pus. Fever, malaise and swollen glands. The body's fight against infection may result in supperation (the formation of pus). View
Acne Skin Acne is the term used for blocked pores leading to spots, cysts, whiteheads, blackheads etc. These can be found on the head, neck, back, shoulders and chest. Sebum (oil) which usually rises to the surface of the skin, gets clogged and then bacteria begin to grow and build- this leads to acne. Acne mostly affects teens going through puberty, (when their hormones are most active), although adults can also be affected. Genes also play a part in why some people are more prone to acne than others. Acne can also cause many social problems and insecurities, ranging from low self esteem and embarrassment to poor social interaction. View
Acute Bronchitis Lungs An infection of the bronchi, the tube that takes air to the lungs. Short dry cough, catarrh, soreness in chest. Temperature may be raised. Viral or bacterial Infection of the bronchi; irritating dust or fumes; colds which "go to the chest". View
Alcoholism Addictions A chronic pathological illness chiefly affecting the nervous and gastroenteric systems characterised by mental disturbance, muscular incoordination and eventually cirrhosis of the liver. Increased fat in liver cells. Alcoholic hepatitis (jaundice). Intestinal bleeding, fluid retention, kidney failure. Habitual excessive consumption of alcohol leading to dependence. View
Allergic Rhinitis Allergies Hay Fever. Inflammation of mucous membranes of the nose. Attacks of sneezing, nasal discharge and blocked nose. May include conjunctivitis, sore throat and deafness from obstruction in the Eustahian tubes. Cause may be a wide range of allergens from house dust, pollen (in May and June) , food additives , colourings in foods and drinks. May also be accompanied by nasal polyps. View
Amenorrhoea Reproductive Organs / Hormonal Amenorrhoea means the abscence of menstruation (periods). Primary amenorrhoea is when a girl does not start menstration by the age of 14 and there is no development of the breasts or pubic hair, or when there is no menstration by the age of 16 but there is normal development of sexual characteristics. Secondary amenorrhoea occurs if a woman misses 3 or more periods in a row, be it elther temporary or a permanent end to her periods, yet has menstruated normally in the past. Amenorrhoea is usually a symptom for another disorder or problem that is occuring within the body. View
Angina/Pectoris Heart / Circulatory A condition where the supply of oxygen by the heart exceeds supply. It is a syndrome, not a dis-ease entity. Severe paroxysmal pain in the chest lasting 2-10 minutes, characterised by feelings of suffocation and apprehension. Sense of constriction in front of chest may radiate to the jaw and/or the left arm. Common cause is the narrowing of the coronary arteries bt atheroma limiting the flow of blood in the heart muscle View
Anorexia Nervosa Eating Disorder Anorexia Nervosa is a chronic eating disorder. It is an illness which mainly affects adolescent girls, although it can occur in both sexes at any age. The most common feature is weight loss coupled with a change in behaviour. Other symptoms include a distorted body image, obsessive exercise and a desperate fear of gaining weight. Many anorexics ignore their hunger and so control their need to eat. Starvation and weight loss can lead to serious medical problems. View
Arthritis Joints Arthritis is the inflammation of one or more joints. The inflammation is often accompanied by pain, swelling, redness and motion limitation. View
Asthma Allergies Asthma is a chronic inflammation of the bronchial tubes (airways). This causes swelling and tightening of the airways making it difficult for the sufferer to breathe. This results in the characteristic wheeze. View
Athletes Foot Feet Superficial infection of the skin of the feet resulting in scaly lesions between the toes sometimes with blisters. Itchy redness and peeling. Sore red areas left after removal of patches of skin. Possible invasion of other parts of the body i.e. fingers/palms. A fungus that can be picked up walking bare foot in sports clus schools or swimming baths. Worse in warm weather. View
Bad Breath Mouth Unpleasant odour on the breath. Common cause - bad teeth and gums i.e. neglected mouth hygiene. Can indicate toxaemia or defective elimination via liver/kidneys/skin. View
Bedwetting Childhood Problems / Illnesses Unconscious persistent discharge of urine in bed primarily by children but adults may be similarly affected. Possible hereditary tendency. Some cases psychological in origin i.e. lack of security/marital disharmony etc. Adenoid or worms sometimes responsible. Loss of tone in the sphincter muscle of the bladder/general nervous debility.
